  • The NRC's Atomic Safety and Licensing Board permitted formal legal opposition to this project. The first-ever challenge to a U.S. SMR construction permit. source

  • In 1991, an explosion at the Union Carbide Seadrift facility killed one worker. Prior OSHA audits had flagged outstanding safety problems at the site. source

  • Germany's pebble-bed AVR reactor had persistent operational problems. South Africa halted its equivalent program before construction ever began. source
